Course topics

Day 1: Foundations of Strategic Leadership

  • Evolving Theories of Strategic Leadership: Definitions, evolution, and commonalities in strategic leadership practices.
  • Strategic Performance Management: Measuring performance with tools like the Balanced Scorecard and Performance Prism Framework.
  • Strategic Leadership Tools and Decision Making: Techniques such as SWOT analysis, TOWS analysis, 5-Forces, and VRIO for internal and external assessments.
  • Cutting-Edge Strategic Tools: Exploring digital transformation and ethical leadership with real-world examples like Volkswagen’s emissions scandal.

Day 2: Strategic Leadership in Practice

  • Leadership Types and Applications: Emerging theories, including agile leadership, transactional leadership, and the Four Frames of Leadership.
  • Change Management: Concepts like Kotter’s 8-Step Process for leading change, illustrated through Nokia’s strategic pivot.
  • Case Study Analysis – Leadership in Crisis: Examining leadership responses to crises such as the Tylenol crisis and Boeing’s 737 MAX.
  • Personal Action Plan: Creating a tailored plan with actionable goals, accountability metrics, and peer-reviewed strategies.

Day 3: Digital Transformation and Strategic Application

  • Strategic Leadership in the Digital Age: Leveraging generative AI and frameworks like McKinsey’s Digital Quotient for digital transformation.
  • Case Studies in Digital Strategy: Hands-on learning with digital tools like Tangible Growth for strategic leadership.
  • Group Presentations: Teams present and refine their strategic leadership plans with feedback from instructors and peers, culminating in a certificate ceremony.

This immersive 3-day program combines theory, interactive activities, and real-world case studies to equip participants with the skills needed to excel in strategic leadership roles.

Teaching methods

This short course involves an interactive learning approach, in which the participant is stimulated to move beyond his/her own organisation or industry sector. Learning takes place through:

  • Classroom interactive lecturing
  • Interactive guest lecture of C- suite Executives
  • Self-study
  • In-class group assignments to reflect on the learning
  • Individual assignment, presentation and discussion

Each participant receives a certificate of participation. Each participant receives a certificate of participation.
This certificate is being awarded as evidence of participation in a post-graduate training at indicative level 6 or 7 of the EQF. The minimum study load is 14 hours and an attendance level of 80% is required. This certificate is being awarded in the form of a soft copy when the training is online or a hard copy during a face-to-face training.
