MSM supports inclusive private sector development in Burundi

07-12-2023

From November 27 to 29, 2023 MSM provided a Female Entrepreneurship and Gender Lens Investing Training Workshop in Bujumbura, Burundi. The event was organized by MSM in partnership with the Chamber of Young Entrepreneurs in Burundi (CTJEBU), with Dr. Mulu Hundera, a gender and female entrepreneurship expert, as the facilitator. The training workshop involved various youth organizations promoting entrepreneurship in Burundi, attracting 22 participants, including 12 women.

The core objective of this training was to enhance the capacities and knowledge of young female and male leaders. By furnishing these leaders with crucial tools, the workshop aimed to empower women economically, advance gender equality, and actively contribute to fostering inclusive private sector development in Burundi.

The training was structured to delve into the intricacies of female entrepreneurship, focusing on its driving forces and unique challenges. A participant shared, "This training introduced me to the  essence of female entrepreneurship, offering strategies to support female-led business”

Another key emphasis of the training was gender lens investing as a pivotal tool to bolster women's economic endeavours and promote female leadership. Within this framework, a topic on the gender lens investing in climate finance was also addressed during the workshop. Participants showcased positive learning outcomes. For instance, one participant articulated, "Gender lens investing was a novel concept for me. The training highlighted my organization's role in the gender lens investing ecosystem, aiming to empower women economically and foster female leadership." Another participant expressed, "I acquired insights into integrating climate change into female entrepreneurship, particularly the gender dynamics within climate change investment. I am now inclined to utilize this framework in our initiatives supporting youth entrepreneurs in agriculture."

The final segment of the training centered on effectuation thinking in the context of designing female entrepreneurship and gender lens investing initiatives.

A participant remarked, "Effectuation thinking emerged as an invaluable approach in problem-solving, especially in Gender Lens Investing and female entrepreneurship. It guides us to focus on the resources at our disposal rather than solely seeking external solutions when designing projects to address pressing social issues."

Overall, the workshop emerged as a pivotal platform fostering comprehensive insights and practical tools for advancing female entrepreneurship gender lens investing, which are vital for inclusive economic growth in Burundi.
