MSM starts cooperation with universities in Algeria
On 29 March, Dr Huub Mudde, MSM Senior Project Consultant formally started the new cooperation of MSM with three Algerian universities in a meeting in Oran. Funded by RVO (www.rvo.nl), MSM will strengthen the entrepreneurship capacities of the University of Oran 1, the University of Oran 2, and the University of Constantine 1.
The project is part of the Netherlands support to Algeria in creating employment for youth, by developing entrepreneurship programs that can improve the entrepreneurial mindset of students. Over a period of two years, a team of experts will undertake a needs assessment of each university to map the context specific needs and, in a later stage, to formulate an entrepreneurship development strategy and implementation plan for each participating institution. Subsequently, MSM will offer support to each of the three universities in their efforts to integrate entrepreneurship in their practices in the first year. Depending on the specific needs of the university, the activities can focus on (the combination of) strategy development, pre- or extracurricular development or student-led activities.
At the universities Oran1 and Oran2, Dr Mudde together with the local project coordinator Mr Yacine Chikhar, had meetings with university leaders, teachers, students, and entrepreneurs. The main conclusion is that entrepreneurship education and support to students who would like to start-up a business is just at the beginning. With the universities, MSM will work on implementing a more structured, well integrated strategic approach.
Many universities globally strive to be entrepreneurial, specifically by engaging in and promoting the creation of knowledge-based company. They promote business creation for a reason. Beyond the need to generate funding for their own purposes in the light of declining state subsidies, universities want to contribute to the economic development of their communities (Clark, 1998; Coyle, Gibb and Haskins, 2013). In countries with a large, young population, like Algeria, one way in which to promote such development is to provide for youth employment through entrepreneurship.
This project is funded by the RVO and is managed by MSM Senior Project Consultant Dr Huub Mudde.
