Mastering Strategic Leadership: Empowering leaders from around the globe

19-11-2024

From 11–17 November 2024, MSM welcomed 21 professionals from 14 different countries to Maastricht for the Short Executive Programme on Strategic Leadership. Participants from Albania, Tanzania, Saudi Arabia, Ghana, Sudan, Kosovo, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Vietnam, Italy, Oman, Tunisia, Mauritania, and Libya gathered to develop their leadership skills, share diverse insights, and learn how to tackle complex global challenges with strategic precision.

The practical approach of the programme, combined with engaging discussions and real-world case studies, created a dynamic and collaborative learning environment. For Mrs Dhurata Prokshi, from Kosovo, this was precisely the opportunity she had hoped for. “I applied for this programme because I wanted to enhance my strategic thinking, become more adaptable, and learn how to drive change,” she shared. Reflecting on her experience, she said, “The programme wasn’t just about theories or abstract concepts, but practical strategies that I could apply right away. The mix of lectures, discussions, and real-life case studies helped me see leadership from a much broader perspective.”

The diversity of the group was a valuable addition to the learning experience. Mr. Amit Biswas from the Netherlands particularly highlighted this: “The best part of the course was connecting with an amazing group of professionals from around the world. It was a unique experience to grow both personally and professionally together with such talented individuals.”

Ms Huong Nguyen, from Vietnam, shared a similar perspective:
“It was an incredible experience to learn alongside participants from diverse countries and industries, offering a multi-dimensional perspective on leadership and strategy. This diversity enriched the learning process and broadened my global mindset. Additionally, I had the privilege of expanding my network, making new friends, and sharing the beauty of Vietnamese culture with others.”

The programme was also praised for its relevance to today’s fast-changing business environment. Ms Nguyen explained:
“The programme was excellently organised, with practical and highly relevant content tailored to the fast-evolving, competitive global business landscape. Professor Leo delivered knowledge with passion and expertise, sharing valuable insights and real-world experiences. These allowed me to identify areas for improvement in my current organisation and inspired new strategic approaches.”

The opportunity to work with professionals from different cultures was particularly appreciated by Mr Frank Hartenberg, from the Netherlands. “The opportunity to share a learning environment with participants from different cultures and backgrounds really made a difference for me. Over the years, I’ve followed multiple training programmes, but usually with Dutch colleagues only. As I work for a global company, this international approach was incredibly valuable.”

Participants also gained practical tools and techniques that they could apply immediately. Ms Nguyen explained how these will help her in her professional role:
“The knowledge acquired will significantly support my efforts to design and execute strategies in Vietnam’s pharmaceutical market, where innovation and cross-disciplinary collaboration are critical success factors. I particularly value tools like the Strategy House, Strategy Map and Balanced Scorecard, which provide clear strategy and actionable measures of strategic effectiveness.”

One of the key strengths of the programme is how it helps participants see things from a wider viewpoint. “It was truly an eye-opening experience,” said Mrs Prokshi. “I enjoyed learning about how leadership is approached in different parts of the world and across various industries. The insights shared by professionals from diverse cultural backgrounds turned into valuable learning opportunities. This experience greatly expanded my perspective on leadership, and I gained a deeper appreciation for how diverse approaches can drive success.”
