Kick-starting the development of ecosystems for employability in Ghana

02-04-2024

In February 2024, the “Vocational Education and Training (VET) ecosystems for employability” project in Ghana officially started during the kick-off week in Accra, Ghana. During the project kick-off, partners from Ghana, Greece and the Netherlands came together for the first time to launch the project successfully.

This initial meeting was crucial for the partners to get on the same page where the project goals, timelines, and expectations were clarified. Furthermore, this face-to-face gathering supported in building the professional relationship of the consortium by partners introducing themselves, fostering communication and collaboration throughout the project.

As part of the project launch, ATVET partner Adidome Farm Institute was visited. Visiting the ATVET that is one of the two ATVET partners who is being capacitated with support from the project gave a unique opportunity to have direct interaction with the staff and see firsthand the challenges they face, ensuring the project truly addresses their needs.

The challenge the project is tackling

In the face of a changing climate, Ghana's agricultural sector is facing unprecedented challenges. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) offers a promising solution to enhance food security and environmental sustainability, but its successful implementation hinges on a skilled workforce capable of operating CSA technologies. This project addresses this critical need by strengthening agricultural training and vocational education and training (ATVET) institutions in Ghana to capacitate the agricultural colleges with the necessary skills and knowledge for a thriving CSA sector with a main focus on production and processing.

This project brings together a consortium of Ghanaian VET schools: Kwadaso Agricultural College and Adidome Farm Institute, European academic partners: CINOP, American Farm School and MSM, Ghanaian university: Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghanaian private partner: Bunash Enterprise and Farms and Ghanaian NGO: Rights and Advocacy Initiatives Network (RAIN).

This project is be managed by Hans Nijhoff, Senior Project Consultant and Veerle Barten, Project Consultant at MSM’s Expert Centre on Emerging Economies. The project will run from December 2023 until November 2026.
