Kick-Off Week: Strengthening Vocational Excellence for Climate-Smart Agriculture in Tanzania

17-03-2025

During the first week of March, all partners of the “Building Inclusive Centres of Vocational Excellence for Skills & Employment Development in the Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) Sector” project gathered in Tanzania for the kick-off meeting and visits to the four Vocational Education and Training (VET) colleges involved in the project, located in different regions of the country.

The first two days (March 3rd and 4th) were spent at the Kilimanjaro Agricultural Training Centre (KATC) near Moshi, in the Kilimanjaro region, where the colleague Principal, Ms. Witness Bashaka, kindly hosted the event. During these sessions, all the partners led by the project coordinator on behalf of MSM-UM, Ms. Liliana Bedoya, had the opportunity to review the project activities, clarify key concepts, and work together on the initial Monitoring and Evaluation system. Additionally, they visited the college facilities to update the needs assessment and on the second day was the turn for a tour to the Kilacha Agricultural & Livestock Training Centre (KALTC), also located in the area. This time was invaluable for bringing together the team responsible for leading the project within the institution and for sharing experiences and learning from each other.

On Wednesday, March 5th, representatives from MSM and NACTVET travelled to the Tanga region for a visit to the VET “MATI Mlingano, Ministry of Agriculture Training Institute”, on route to Dar es Salaam, where  the official kick-off meeting took place next day, March 6th, at the headquarters of the National Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NACTVET). This meeting had the participation of all the Tanzanian partners, including Profyta/GVA, the management team from NACTVET and was chaired by Dr. Amani H. Makota, Executive Secretary of NACTVET.

On Friday, the coordinating team (MSM-UM and NACTVET) travelled to Iringa for a visit to Profyta/GVA, a key private-sector partner in the consortium. Profyta/GVA is a seed production company in Tanzania that also provides advisory and information services for smart farming. To conclude the week, the coordination team visited the fourth VET institution, Mt Maria Goretti Agriculture Training Institute (MGATI), in the Kilolo District for a meeting with the staff and a tour to the facilities.

This intensive and productive week provided an excellent opportunity for representatives from all participating institutions to connect, collaborate, and establish the foundation for a successful partnership. We wish all partners great success in this important project!

A special thanks to the team from NACTVET, Mr. Musiba Majigo coordinating all the local activities and Ms. Jane Mressa for the detailed documentation of this visit.
