Empowering women in the Ethiopian health sector
From 19 – 24 March 2018, MSM supported a six-day Gender and Female Talent Development Training in the Black Lion Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The training was funded by the Elizabeth Strouven Foundation in Maastricht. The purpose was to empower women, who were being educated or working as medical specialists or head nurses, with practical tools and leadership skills, in particular to help them execute their profession in a gender sensitive manner and fulfilling their exemplary role in the community.
In the first three days, 26 women participated in the training. The training focused on the basics and concepts related to gender equality, women empowerment and female talent development. A number of issues of particular importance at the interface of health and gender were addressed. The training was of a highly interactive nature, which allowed the participants to adapt the acquired knowledge optimally to their own working environment. The outcome of the training was a concise action list to work on gender equality, when working as a nurse or health specialist.
In the second three days, 12 women were selected among those who were most active and had potential of becoming core trainer, to train new participants or conduct refresher trainings in future. These women were trained to become master trainers, to enable them to pass on the gender related knowledge to more women in the Black Lion Hospital in future. During these three days of training, topics like female leadership, second generation gender bias, gender-based violence and work-life balance were discussed. The participants came out with a preliminary action plan for furthering gender and women empowerment related knowledge and to address gender-based violence in the Black Lion Hospital.
