Empowering Palestinian Water Utilities: A Knowledge Exchange in The Netherlands

16-09-2024

As part of the Nuffic Orange Knowledge Programme (OKP) Tailor-Made-Training project, a delegation from Palestine visited The Netherlands from August 19 to August 21, 2024. The visit was organized by Maastricht School of Management (MSM) in collaboration with the Water Sector Regulatory Council (WSRC) of Palestine and aimed to strengthen the development of resilient regional water utilities.

This exposure visit, held under the theme "Building Resilient Water Utilities," provided an opportunity for the delegation to learn from Dutch expertise in water management. Participants from the WSRC and newly formed National Water Utilities gained insights into the Dutch water sector’s operational practices, water distribution systems, financing, benchmarking and sustainability initiatives. The visit was structured to support the ongoing reform of Palestine’s water sector, which seeks to consolidate smaller utilities into larger, more economically viable regional units.

The program included visits to prominent Dutch organizations such as World Waternet / Waternet, BNG Bank, Acacia Water, Vewin and the Netherlands Water Partnership. These organizations shared their knowledge and innovative practices on water management, cost recovery strategies, benchmarking, and environmental sustainability. This newly gained knowledge can be implemented by the participants at enhancing water service delivery in Palestine.

This important collaboration underscores the commitment of both countries to fostering sustainable development in the water sector and ensuring the economic and environmental sustainability of Palestine’s newly created regional water utilities.
