Development of Business Incentives for Young Agribusinesses in Burundi
Within the framework of the TMT “Strengthening the appeal of a bright future in agriculture to youth through entrepreneurship and innovation” in Burundi, Mr. Drs. Andre Dellevoet delivered in French an interesting training module entitled “Development of business incentives and support program to promote entrepreneurship” from 26 till 28 February 2024. The trainees included professionals from the financial sector, government organizations to promote entrepreneurship and young agribusiness companies in Burundi.
Burundi’s youth population represents a significant untapped source of economic growth, but they face challenges such as poor access to land, resources, infrastructure, finance, technology, and knowledge. The project aims to make the agri-food sector more attractive to young people and enhance their capacity to generate income by providing support, guidance, and training in entrepreneurship.
The topics of the training module included:
- Challenges of young agribusinesses in a fragile states context
- The state of innovation and R&D in Burundi
- Available incentives to support innovation
- Protection of intellectual property in Burundi
- The role of innovation in small business development in African agriculture
- Financial support mechanisms
One of the key take-aways was that innovation is not just about adoption of new technologies, i.e. some of the most effective innovations can be about low cost improvements in business processes or products/services. However, in the context of Burundi, one of the poorest countries in the world with a long history of political instability and conflict, the critical innovation is more about adopting an appropriate business model.
