Developing your personal leadership skills to improve team performance

08-10-2024

“The course was meticulously designed, blending theoretical frameworks with practical exercises. Each day focused on different aspects of personal leadership, encouraging us to explore how our own values, behaviors, and decisions shape our leadership style.” Said Ms. Janine Hanger from South Africa after successfully completing the short executive programme on Personal Leadership Skills which took place from 16 – 20 September 2024.

Ms. Hanger continues: “This intensive five-day programme not only sharpened my leadership abilities but also offered invaluable insights through deep self-reflection, rich interaction with diverse participants, and Professor Heling’s expert guidance.”

The programme was equally valuable for Mr. David Outumuro Rodriguez from Spain: “This week at MSM has been intense and fulfilling. It has exceeded my initial expectations. The content is diverse, touching on aspects that not only shape your leadership style but also your everyday interactions and relationships.”

Many professionals choose for MSM because of its multiculrutal learning environment, which is also highly valued in MSM’s Short Executive Programmes: “What really adds value is the diverse mix of participants from around the world. Discussing topics through the lens of different cultural perspectives has been fascinating and enriching.”

For Ms. Hanger the diversity of the participants was one of the most enriching aspects: “Attendees came from various parts of the world, each bringing their unique cultural backgrounds, professional experiences, and perspectives on leadership. The diversity in the room allowed for meaningful discussions that highlighted the importance of adaptive leadership in an increasingly globalized world. Hearing about leadership challenges and solutions from different cultural and organizational contexts broadened my understanding and helped me appreciate the varying dimensions of leadership across different environments.”

About the Personal Leadership Skills programme
To effectively manage, develop and lead others, you must first be able to manage, develop and lead yourself. Leading yourself means knowing who you are, and understanding how you act in different interactions and situations. Developing your personal leadership style/values is a central theme throughout this programme. It offers a combination of theoretical concepts and practical exercises, which are adapted based on the input of the participants. Dr. Geert Heling designed the programme for (potential) team leaders to enhance their personal leadership and management style, enabling them to deal effectively with vision, power and influence.

Ms. Hanger, was very positive about the way Dr. Heling conducted the course: “Mr. Professor Heling's extensive knowledge and experience in the field of leadership were evident throughout the course. His approach to teaching was engaging, clear, and thought-provoking. He encouraged open dialogue and fostered a positive learning atmosphere where everyone felt comfortable sharing their experiences and thoughts. His ability to combine leadership theory with real-world application made the course highly practical. Each concept he introduced was backed by research but was also linked to actionable strategies that we could immediately apply in our own leadership contexts. Professor Heling also made time for individual consultations, offering tailored feedback that was both constructive and motivational.”

Mr. Outumuro Rodriguez added: “Professor Geert’s presentation skills and the way he engages with the class are impressive—his real-life examples make complex topics so relatable. “
