The power of Accounting: lessons learned by full-time MBA students
“I enjoyed the Accounting module! I used to consider accounting as a fringe and dull activity, useful only for bookkeeping and controlling inventory. However, the accounting module as part of the full-time MBA curriculum helped me to see accounting as a useful tool for understanding how healthy a company is.”
This is how current full-time MBA student Pedro Assis summarized his experience. “Accounting is also a powerful tool to evaluate each process and to determine how effective these processes are inside a firm.”
The Accounting module focused on the use of current reporting and accounting concepts in international business. The module discussed how accounting information can be interpreted and used in managerial decision-making. The students also learned more about financial decision-making and its art form. Financial reporting constitutes the basis of economic decision-making; hence its importance cannot be underestimated.
The second half of the course focused on managerial accounting. This was largely aimed at planning and controlling with the help of financial and nonfinancial information in organizations. The students learned how to use quantitative information for decision-making and how best to structure it to facilitate understanding.
Pedro also appreciated the interaction with his fellow classmates from many different backgrounds. “It was enlightening to read their cases and propose solutions. The lecturer was really helpful in considering our insights and proposing new ones.”
