A sneak peek in the life of full-time MBA alumnus Moustafa Sobh

13-03-2025

My name is Moustafa Sobh and I completed the MSM Full-time MBA in 2025. I am a Marine Engineer turned entrepreneur with a deep passion for sustainability. My journey has taken me from project planning and overseeing complex operations to running and operating businesses. I am currently leading DCarbon NL, a sustainability consulting firm, where I aim to make sustainability practices more accessible and easier for everyone.

Why did you decide to pursue an MBA in general?
I decided to pursue a full-time MBA to build a strong business mindset that complements my engineering background. I wanted to develop my leadership skills, understand business strategy, and gain the tools needed to transform my passion for sustainability into a viable business.

Why did you decide to pursue a full-time MBA at Maastricht School of Management?
I chose Maastricht School of Management (MSM) because of its strong international focus, diverse student body, and reputation for blending theory with practical experience.

Looking back on my time at MSM
I look back at my time at MSM with great appreciation. The experience challenged me to step out of my comfort zone and collaborate with talented individuals from all over the world. I would say it was a transformative period.

Working with diverse teams, managing different cultures and mindsets, and meeting and learning from diverse lecturers with various backgrounds were some of my fondest memories. These experiences enriched my understanding and broadened my perspective.

How do you feel your MBA at MSM has helped you for prepare for your career?
The MSM Full-time MBA gave me the strategic mindset needed to launch and grow my own business. The curriculum provided me with a holistic understanding of how businesses operate, but more importantly, networking was the biggest asset. The connections I made continue to open doors and create opportunities.

As co-founder of DCarbon NL, I run and manage the operations where we focus on delivering sustainability consulting services, including ESG assessments, carbon footprint analysis, and life cycle assessments. We leverage the latest tools, merging experience with new technological advancements to provide our clients with the best possible solutions.

Are there any specific skills or lessons learned during your time as a student that you find particularly valuable in your professional or personal life?
One of the most valuable lessons I learned at MSM was the importance of adaptability. The dynamic nature of business requires you to remain open to change and continuously learn. This adaptability has been crucial in navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship.

The MBA's emphasis on strategic thinking and leadership continues to guide my decision-making process, whether it's strategic planning, overseeing marketing, or managing finances. The skills I acquired are deeply integrated into my daily work.

My goal for the future
My ultimate goal is to position DCarbon as a leading force in the sustainability sector, driving meaningful change across industries. I envision creating scalable solutions that help businesses reduce their carbon footprint and comply with sustainability regulations.

Studying at the Tapijnkazerne campus
Studying in the Netherlands, particularly at the Tapijnkazerne campus, was a refreshing experience. The country's forward-thinking approach and sustainability inspired me. I loved the language and the people and truly felt the welcoming environment.

My advice to current and future MBA students
Embrace every opportunity to learn and network. Build relationships with your peers and professors, as they are invaluable resources. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, it's where the real growth happens.
